Goat milk ice cream?

Some of you might be raising your eyebrows right now because you've heard goat milk tastes funny.
We could blame the funny-taste fallacy on a conspiracy concocted by those comical Far Side cows.

So you should know that more of the world's people consume goat milk than cow milk.

Our goats have proven to be hardy animals. They've adapted well to heat and cold, productively foraged
and grazed [saved us mowing time and expense], and are inexpensive to keep.

Since mature does (females) usually weigh between 120 to 135 pounds they're much easier to handle
than hefty cows, which can weigh 1,000 pounds each.

And our goats surprised us in other ways,as well. They're highly intelligent, remarkably friendly and very curious.
Their antics amuse us for hours.

With all that in mind, it's easy to see why dairy goats are the next ideal addition to our family farm

Incredible snowfall amounts of nine to 14 inches fell in the DFW Metro area from 4 a.m. Thursday to Friday morning, Feb 11-12.

The area's official snow total, measured at DFW Airport, is 12.5 inches -- the most snow ever in a 24 hour period. And on Thursday alone, we got 11.2 inches, which is a new record for a single calendar day.

The storm has also pushed this winter to the second snowiest on record. We've had 15.7 inches of snow this season, and for Poetry that's a record.

Most of the area kids were thrilled to have the day off from school and all this snow; well, maybe not all kids ...

So with camera, and Shiner in hand, we can report all are safe and well in Poetry, Texas. Thanks for visiting Y'All.

Another Year of Change and Thanks

Yes we had many surprises this year both sad and joyful. Said goodbye to dear ones and welcomed new members to our extended family.

First frost is on the way to Poetry so wood is stacked and comforters drawn tight. Our pasture friends will need lots of TLC till Spring... my back already aches. So to Dorothy, we miss you dearly, to Kylie, welcome to the ride of your life.

New Additions and Changes ...

May's soaking rains gave way to 100 degree days in June; while providing a bountiful hay for our harvest this year.

We also had a new litter of Boer kids to supplement our herd. Nanny and kiddos are doing just fine. As our herd continues to grow Poetry Ridge Boer Goats is becoming more of a reality that will one day support our rural, semi-retired lifestyle.

Spring has arrived with welcome showers; the tanks are full again. We'll enjoy a few more weeks of downtime before the mowing begins.

The "Boys" are enjoying some downtime as well before the new batch of goats arrive. And their 24/7 vigil begins for four and two-legged predators.

DB and J drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word.

An earlier discussion had led to an argument about how to spend Valentine's Day and neither of them wanted to concede their position.

As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats and pigs, DB asked sarcastically,
"Relatives of yours?"

"Yep," J replied, "in-laws."

"You know, I was a fool when I married you." DB again, sarcastically.

"Yep" J replied, "but I was in love and didn't notice it.

Smarter than the Tool

Thousands of dollars in materials and hundreds of hours in labor to create a safe home for our goats and their protectors, the Great Pyrenees dogs; 5 ft. no climb fence, solar hot wire barrier and barbed wire where needed.

Yet today I spent hours on the 4 wheeler chasing a Pyr back behind the fence. How...where...I walk this fence twice a day...so tight my body bounces back...hmmm.

Freedom Tunnel...you have to be kidding...all utensils have been removed from their doghouse...they are on bedcheck and treats are now restricted...GEESH

Buy a couple of Great Pyrenees and throw them in the pasture; sounded simple enough. These big boys are not house dogs like our other couch potatoes; they demand a lot of time and training.

Of course we demand a lot from them ... sleeping outdoors with our livestock in below freezing temps and standing up to packs of coyotes/wild dogs and yes... we have panthers in East Texas

As Mr. Obama views the traditional "presidential honeymoon" under pressure even before he enters office, our boys find themselves already hard at work in the pasture.

Like the rest of the country, on the farm we must always focus on creating additional income. And as our military is ever vigilant against America's enemies, our new "pyrs" are tirelessly on guard against predators that threaten our growing herd of milk and meat goats.

Friends in Need are Friends Indeed

Our holiday deed this year was adopting two new pups from Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue [www.txpyrs.org]

Thanks to Susie and Mindee, and all the staff from this unselfish rescue group, for assisting us in bringing these "big boys" home to Poetry [70 lbs. at 8 mo.] They'll soon be patrolling our pastures working tirelessly protecting their goats.

Pharmaceuticals Again Found in U.S. Drinking Water

Drugs taken for pain, infection, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems contaminate drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, according to a report by the Associated Press National Investigation Team.

A USGS survey revealed a list of compounds including the painkillers acetaminophen and ibuprofen, prescription medicines for cardiac disorders and hypertension, and female sex hormones used in birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.

Drinking water treatment plants are not designed to remove these pharmaceutical residues, and the AP team uncovered data showing these same chemicals in treated tap water and water supplies in 24 major metropolitan areas.

No worry in the country ... we mix "our Jack" with "our well water".

We set the clocks back...hate doing that but it comes every year. Also signals first frost and firewood on the hearth. We'll take that trade off.

Dogs are going crazy as the nightlife gets busier with wildlife on the move; the rut is on. Bought new arrows for the crossbow [move over Nuge...DB huntin' hawg the real way.] Already smelling wild stew and deep fried quarters.

Fall in Texas can't come soon enough; our second rainy season and the end of triple digit temps. That's a 2-fer out here.

Cross fences are almost done; new goats will call it home this winter. We'll - I just got corrected -- I'll ] be milking the hairy critters as J thinks up names for our goat cheeses.

Summer and more Summer

Well...Summer refusing to fade quietly...

90+ with high ozone.

Couple of hours on the tractor and your lungs feel like you had two big ol'
Cubano cigars.

And watching J hit the weeding with such intensity compels me to stand off to the side, as back up, in the event logistcs and support are required.

Well now ... 23 triple-digit days so far this year and a 107-degree scorcher that ranks as the hottest day of this year; the ninth straight day of triple-digit heat at the end of the fourth-hottest July on record in North Texas.

And the chores still gotta be done ... got the hay knocked down ... just have to bring it in ... cleaning up downed trees been ignored during this heat; better off as firewood than blockin' the roadway during the Fall storms hopefully coming.

On the wind ... smell some fine grilling ... better head back to the house and fix that pitcher of DB's famous margaritas ... Lady J expects along with her barbeque. Thanks for visiting ... and now today's poetry from Poetry, Texas... Y'All come back soon ... adios

Essentials we can't live without

Two essentials we can't live without
in the country...
rain and dogs;
in that order.

Riding my mower today
I found myself bouncing across
some serious cracks ...
weathermen are saying
another drought is possible.

With little to no rain in Poetry
for the last 30 days,
I haven't figured out why
the grass keeps growing;
lots to learn out here.

And the dogs...smelled today's rain long before I sensed it was upon us. Got the tractor put up in time.

So the rain barrels are full again...keeps our garden alive without drawing down our well. That's a 2Fer out here.
